I recently ran up against a self-induced application disaster on my Blackberry 8800 (that's what I get for messing with stuff I know will probably break), so I needed to do a clean reset of the device to it's factory defaults and then start over again from scratch. I'm not too keen on the idea of reloading the OS if I don't have to (with over the air configuration I have not used a USB cord on my blackberry except for once since I got it), so I started poking around trying to find the on-board reset capability (they call it "wipe" the handheld device). Nothing like trying to find a command deep in the bowels of a multi-layered system. But, this is one that people should not find it easy to accidentally choose...

So, since I finally found it, note to self for the next time I need it:

Blackberry "Wipe-Handheld" command list (at least for my 8800 - same or similar for other models)

  • Options menu
  • Security Options
  • General Settings
  • Menu
  • Wipe handheld
  • Enter password ("Blackberry" or your business-assigned security password)

Useful if you're like me an have a tendency to muck around under the hood too much and gak things up. And yeah, that's a word. Gak.

Warning all application data will be lost! Message services and other Services will be turned off.

Incude 3rd Party Applications

Once this is done, does it restore it to "out of the box" conditions? Also, will network service still work? Or would I have to call and have the BB reconnected to services?

Thanks in advance!

Ok super noob here, i got my sprint 8810 several months ago. And of course i had to mess around with it and change things around. Now i got a 4g sd card for it and all was well. I was Downloading videos, music, the works all was good. Then all of a sudden i started getting this http 413 error and was no longer able to download files bigger than 230kb. What did i do and how can i fix it please???
bung-bung
Friday, 01 August 2008 06:34:13 (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)
@bung-bung, your problem is most likely a limit on a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) Mobile Data Service (MDS) at your company (assuming you are on a corporate server). The BES has a default limit of 128KB size for downloads. This can be adjusted by the server administrator to a value as high as 1024KB (1MB), but doing so can result in certain server performance issues under heavy load, so it's a trade-off. It sounds like maybe they have already doubled the default max request size in your case. The specific value on the server (which can be altered) is the MDS_CS property, up to a max size of 1024KB. Your server version will determine how and where this property is set. Any request in excess of the size established in the MDS_CS property will result in a HTTP 413 error being returned from the server.

If you are using multiple browsers on your Blackberry, you might check to see if they all result in the same error. Depending on your configuration, the Mobile Data Service may or may not be proxying data for each one.

Hope that helps. There may be other reasons for this behavior as well (you might try clearing your cookies and cache in the browser settings of your device, just in case there's something in there that's causing an issue, but the HTTP 413 code you are seeing appears to be a server response).

Good info here... Thank you. I just bought an 8330 from Sprint and was surprised to find out that there is a "seprate Blackberry server" that is different from the server for Sprint's regular data plan. So, it's an extra $30 per month to do what I have been doing (better) with my Treo 700p for years. No thanks! Unless someone can tell me if there is a tethering hack for the 8330... Anyone know of one?

I don't have any experience tethering that model, but glancing at Google it appears many have. Hopefully this search helps:

Awesome, this did the trick, thanks! The only thing I figured I'd mention that upon doing this, if you have a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) account, you will need to call your IT dept and have their Admin reset the account, and then reset it on your phone (options>advanced options>enterprise activation) so your email and contacts will all be restored. Not a hassle at all, but thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks again!

I just sold my 8830 and thought I did the master wipe. The buyer just emailer me that it is password protected. Did our BES somehow reload everything or does the data get wiped but the password stay? Also,I have since canceled my Verizon service so can't do a wipe from the BES now. Is there a command they can do from a locked screen to wipe everything so I don't have to give my password and possibly risk my data in case the data restored somehow? HELP

For the guy who is having trouble setting up his email, you will have to contact the previous owner of the unit and ask him to log into his account online and disable the your PIN from his Internet Email; If you no longer have contact with that person, you will have to call the CS of your Carrier and request to have the account that is attach to your PIN deleted. You will have to provide them with the ESN and PIN of your device.

Tuesday, 28 October 2008 10:31:51 (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)
Matt, with the 8830 and MAster Wipe, all your new buyer have to do is, Enter the password wrong 10 times, the device will then warn him that all data will be wipe from the unit if he continues, eventually he will be prompted to enter the word blackberry, just like the Master Wipe, then he will get in. Your Corporate BES Implemented their security policity forcing a must password, your buyer can now go in and disable password protection.

Thanks for this reminder, just downloaded operamini 4.2, which trashed my settings, phone reset and opera reloaded, the problem with operamini was worldwide apparently.

I can confirm that this takes the phone back to out of the box state, first emails received were welcome to Orange UK and your blackberry has been registered with the network.

DHATP is correct re: Hard Reset

BB Storm: Sucks.

I have a Palm Treo and I thought I’d upgrade to a better system. Well Storm isn’t it. Battery life is non existent if you actually utilize the services available. The click is annoying because first you have to highlight and then click. Not very audible but annoying to use. The subtle touch screen of Palm is MUCH better. You can sit with the storm for hours and still be better off doing something else because you don't get anywhere with it.

I also had random menu options pop up in spanish. Like when I had the keypad up and tap on the three buttons on top, they came out in spanish. Then in Blackberry chat, the menu buttons on the bottom also showed in spanish. All of my language settings were in US English. I triple checked.

Texts I sent were received an average of 2 hours later. This never happened with the Treo. And while I could do smiley faces in BB text, they were no longer available in SMS. My texting capability slowed down considerably to the point that I would rather call than text-which is so not me.

Oh yeah and since I have a mac, syncronizing is pure torture just to end up with contacts and that’s it. Pocketmac doesn’t do media, doesn’t to calendar… I can’t transfer anything over from Palm except the contacts.

For the record, to do a hard reset of the Storm, OPTIONS; SECURITY OPTIONS; GENERAL SETTINGS; SERVICES; WIPE HANDHELD. This took hours to figure out because nobody online said it right. And for the record, when I did the hard reset and turned it back on, it said my data card was corrupted. Thanks. Now I know I got a defective machine. Never buy from a kiosk, just go directly to the store for best service.

All things considered, it was a noble attempt from BB to woo future PDA/Smartphone people, but this isn't it. If I wasn't going to return it tomorrow I would have thrown it a few dozen times. I've only had this for 3 days.

So tomorrow I go and try to return the sucker and return to the Treo for now. iPhone is tempting but the $$$ involved is not quite worth it just yet.

I have a BlackBerry 7130c it was my brothers and he is really weird and possesive of his things this phone is like 2 or three years old and he will never use it again or sell it but he would never willingly let me have it. i found it under the couch at my moms old house while cleaning. It works fine i had it re-finished and re-painted so that it looks pretty new, i did this wipe but there are some applications and themes that i think he downloaded while he had the phone. I need a way to completely set it back to original applications and im not sure what it came with originally or what was downloaded. If he sees ANY application that he downloaded when he had the phone he is going to flip out at me and throw a hissy fit (he still has the 2 year old "MINE" mentality). Its already going to be suspicious that it is the same model number and he is going to look for the old one in the house so any help on clearing that crap out would be helpfull

Alison - You should probably just give it back to your brother. Seems like it *is* his, and we all know you don't want to feel guilty for the rest of your life hiding from your brother the fact that you stole something from him and even went as far as to paint it to hide your dishonesty from him. :)
