If you're like me, you rely on Google a lot to help you though your day. There are a few sites out there that - much to my frustrated chagrin - include their content in Google's index but won't let you see the content when you click the search results link - unless you sign up for an account (sometimes you even have to pay). I know there are some ways around the blocked access (Google can see the content, so there are open doors), but what I really want is a way to avoid seeing those sites in my search results.

As it turns out, excluding a domain from search results is very simple. It's not very clearly documented anywhere, but I'll tell you here, so you'll be a tiny bit smarter and look really cool to whomever you show it to in the future.

To start, one key thing about searching with Google that we need to understand is that in pretty much any Google search you can exclude anything you want by preceding it with a minus sign when you type your term into the search box. Knowing this, we can exclude almost anything - including a domain/site.

Next, we need to know how to search and specify a domain in our search query term. We do this by entering the word "site," followed by a colon, followed by the domain name. For example, I can search for an exact match on my name within this site's domain by structuring my search term like this:

Similarly, if I want to search for exact matches on "Greg Hughes," but this time I want to search all sites except greghughes.net, I do it like this:

Note the "minus sign" that precedes the "site:" search operator in this case. That's how we tell Google to exclude the site/domain specified.

So there you have it. Want to exclude a domain from your search term? Just specify the domain with "-site:" and you're all set.

But what if you don't want to specify the domain to exclude every time by hand? In that case, set up a Google Custom Search Engine (http://www.google.com/coop/cse/) and specify during setup that you want your custom search engine to include results from the entire Internet. Then, after your search engine has been created, go to the Control Panel, choose the "Sites" tab, and from there you can specify as many domains as you like to exclude from every search. You'll get a custom search engine that you can tweak to your heart's content.

That's it - hope it helps someone in need. Enjoy!

Thanks a bunch! I was, as Mansour, also wondering how to exclude experts-exchange.com from my serch results! This works like a charm!

Why does experts exchange always claim to have answers to my searches - has anyone ever paid them and proved their worth (or not)?

I've paid for experts Exchange in the past and found it to be pretty useful. It was worth this cost in my case, and there were some very well-informed people in there.

How funny! I found this page after looking for how to exclude experts-exchange as well! I didn't search for that site specifically, just how to exclude sites from google search. Guess it annoys a lot of us!

How Funny and Humorous - I found this site seeking a way to exclude experts exchange also. Just how much do they actually have to pay google to be ranked so highly to give us all the absolute and utters hits.

I hate experts exchange. This is exactly the site that made me look for a way to exclude a domain from my search results. Thanks for the article.

Funny thing is, I was helping a guy in the office figure out how to exclude domains from his searches as well and came across this. Excellent information. Thanks for posting.

On another note: most people don't realize that if you search on something and get the Expert-Exchange site in the results, click on it, then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, about 75-80% of the time the solutions/ accepted answers will be there. You don't have to sign up for their services to get those answers. There are a few times that I went to Expert-Exchange and they had the solution/answer behind a log in, but most of the time it isn't.

LOL! I ended up on this page precisely because I'm fed up with getting useless experts-exchange.com results in my searches.

Hehehe! I also came here because I want to exclude expert-exchange results from my search. Their results are useless, they're spam. Those smart guys collected for free thousands of interesting questions and answers, then they put a charge on them.
I'd like Google to exclude every reference to their domain.

Hi,

Thanks a lots for this tip. Expert-exchange will be banned forever from my search results :)

I wonder why Google do not ban this site forever. It is not following the main rule of conduct wich says : "display the same thing for bots and human ...".
Tuesday, 27 January 2009 08:31:02 (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)
Wow -- I can't believe EVERYONE here came to find out how to remove experts-exchange... me too. I can't tell you how annoying I find this site.
Thursday, 29 January 2009 05:19:52 (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)
I'm on the trail of excluding Experts Exchange too. I'll always remember the story of when they first set the site up at www.expertsexchange.com and quite a few content filters blocked it, because they read it as expert sex change!

Anyway, I've found a nice site that lets you create a search plugin for Firefox, IE7 AND the Google Toolbar, very easily: ready.to/search. Hope this helps.

I too found this article in my quest to ban Experts Exchange from my search results.

wow same here, expertsexchange too :) glad to have found this, incredible how many ppl wanted to block the same site =P its so so annoying =\ i think i opened it like 100 times at least by mistake =\ if i was google i would give them -50 or at least -10 penalty to make the users less frustrated and provide relevant results... i mean if i was searching for the result and included the keyword PAY TO KNOW HOW TO ... etc then it would be relevant but it seems they just like to frustrate many people and grab a lot of cash =\ this is the only website that i have wanted to exclude and its the most annoying one i know...

wow seriously, i hate to say it, but 'ya me too, i was just trying to get rid of experts-exchange'. lol!

just fyi, a really useful (and free) site is stackoverflow.com. (i have no affiliation at all with them, other than as a happy user.)

thanks for the great article!

Unbelievable - same for me too. That damn experts-exchange is a real PITA, and the way the windows cover/uncover... sometimes making you think how stupid we all are for not paying for this thing.... then I check the cached results and find nothing. It's really amazing that we all were referred to this site from our attempts to ELIMINATE experts-exchange. This helps show us all the power of keyword marketing, for sure!

Hey guys, there is a way to see experts-exchange's posts. Just blacklist experts-exchange.com javascript using noscript or similar. Then take a look at the cached result. Some fake posts saying that you need a membership will appear in the top, but scroll down and you'll see the real posts... That site is not actually that helpful, so this is only for entertainment purposes - so you may now see how "helpful" the experts really are --

This thread is awesome! I put my hand up too, I found this page, looking for a way to exclude that annoying experts-exchange from my results too! I AM NOT ALONE!! Wonderful. Thanks for the tip, setting up a custom search right now, I don't want to waste another second on that waste of bandwidth :)

I came here looking to get rid of experts-exchange.com too.

Another method is to put the following entry in your /etc/hosts file:

127.0.0.1 www.experts-exchange.com

That way, even if you do accidentally hit upon it, you'll get an error instead of making it to the site.

experts-exchange doubtless pay google a sum for directing searches in their direction.

I was looking for a way to exclude the expert-sexchange idiots as well, and some other MFAs like bigresource.com

Thanks a bunch.

I, too, wished to blast experts-exchange from orbit. My next challenge is to configure my Mac Safari's search field (the box in the upper right corner) so that I can subsitute this wonderful custom search engine for the default Google search.

Any clues?

I know that Firefox and Chrome exist, but I'm specifically asking about Safari...

I don't understand... experts-exchange is an EXTREMELY useful resource to me, but that's because I actually pay the 13 bucks a month for the membership.
Tuesday, 16 March 2010 08:17:22 (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)
You guys are missing the boat with Expert Exchange. They ACTUALLY HAVE ANSWERS! Just scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and look for the accepted solution! About 90% of the time, they answer is there! Granted, the site crushes my CPU for some reason but I actually find good info there.

www.BigResource.com is completely worthless. They generate NO content, on steal from others and then don't display they entire thread
