Blogging from Word 2007

Word is a great tool for writing stuff, right? Blogging is all about communicating with words (and pictures, too). So, why not use Word to write your blog posts?

Stop, don't jump to the end of this post to push the comment button yet. I'm not an idiot. I'm not endorsing you commit HTML suicide. If you've ever written a post in Word 2003 or before and then copied and pasted the text into your web browser you know what I'm talking about. Sure you can do it, but you have to run one of those HTML clean up tools so that your posts don't look mangled. Even then the HTML is not tight and clean, right?

Well no more. We've been working late into the nights and very late into our development schedule for Word 2007 and we have a special goody for all you bloggers in Beta 2 of Office 2007. That's right blog post authoring from Word. This is a very late breaking feature and is definitely beta software. That said, I hope that everyone is pleasantly surprised with where we are going with this feature.

Why bother?

When I write a blog post using my blog providers web-based editor I miss some of the familiar Word features that I've come to rely on, specifically background spelling (those little red squiggles) and autocorrect. These features keep me from making stupid mistakes. Also, I simply want to use the tool that I use for most of my other writing tasks.

Click on the picture above to see the a larger version of the image. Notice that the new user interface has been scoped to include the feature you most likely will need when authoring a blog post. We've gone from seven tabs on the ribbon to just two! The Home tab has been replaced with a Blog Post tab. We've add some special commands that you will need to manage your blog service accounts and publish your posts. We even added strikethrough to the basic text group since bloggers like using it so much.

Publishing clean HTML to your blog

That's right. No more verbose Word HTML. The goal for this feature is not pure fidelity, but the right fidelity for your blog. The HTML for this post was created by Word. Go ahead, click View, Source in your browser and look at the HTML starting with "Word is a great tool..." We really are going pretty basic here. Bold become <strong>, Italic becomes <em>, Heading 1 become <h1>, Quotes become <blockquote> and on it goes. There are definitely kinks in Beta 2. For example we are encoding smart quotes incorrectly so I had to turn off that feature in Word, but the goal is to output just what is needed to make your blog post clean and readable (code and rendered HTML).


When you set up your blog you can specify an upload site and Word will take care of uploading any pictures that you insert in the blog post. Also, we'll automatically generate & upload PNGs for the Office graphics (charts, diagrams, etc.) that you insert in your post.

In Beta 2 we have basic FTP support. We hope to add support for metaweblog API picture handling, SharePoint picture libraries, and one or two others. While we have a limited ability to add many more providers to this late breaking feature, the feature is extensible and other providers can insure that their systems work with Word even after Office 2007 ships.

Getting started

You can start a new blog by simply going to the File icon, New dialog and selecting "New Blog Post." Or, if you want to start your post from an existing document go to the File icon and select Publish and Blog.

Setting up your blog

This is pretty standard stuff if you've ever used one of the many blog post authoring applications. In Beta 2 we support MSN Spaces, SharePoint 2007 (of course), Blogger, and Community Server (which is used for blogs.msdn.com). You can also set up a custom account with services that support the metaweblog API or the ATOM API. All the blog providers seems to interpret these APIs a bit different so there kinks we're still working out. But the basics should work in Beta 2. We hope to add a few more services to the list before we ship. The Word blog authoring feature is extensible and we will publish information so that blog providers can insure that their systems work with Word.

 PS. A little honesty
Did I mention that this was beta software and we were running hot? For complete transparency I need to admit a couple things. I had to make a few hand tweaks to my post due to bugs (I'm sure our developer would blame it on user error). I had to upload and hand code the pictures because I had problems with my FTP site. And, I had to hand change the items with the CODE tag since we didn't map the Word code style correctly. You too can help find a report bugs with this feature once beta 2 is available. More on that later.

Whew! That feels better. Now I can sleep soundly.

In your screenshot for WordBlog UI I didn't see an 'exit' or close button.  As you've removed the other Ribbon tabs (not quite sure I'm understanding why that was done rather than using some 'contextual' tabs as Jensen shows for things like working on pictures) is this a 'view' in Word, or an outside applet, or ???

Element names in all the tags are in uppercase letters and some attribute values are not encapsulated in quotation marks. 3) Any chance you guys can make the output XML friendly so that the HTML fragment can be inserted into a XHTML validated template. Of course, it will be even better if the output is XHTML friendly, not just XML friendly!

It's not hard to do it right and it's long past the time for Microsoft to obey web standards. There are more blogging tools and users than there ever will be Word 2007 Blog users. The other question. Why not just create a rich text box plugin for the browser that permits word like layout and editing, but persists its contents to standards compliant markup? Everyone would use that. Heck you could even define the interfaces to work in a JVM or the .NET runtime making it cross platform from day 1. I mean we're talking text layout here, very hard in the eighties, still a challenge in the 90's, but a solved problem in the first decade of the new milleniim. Do I really need a 30MB app to write in a textbox?

Blogging is about server side forms generation to manage entry input, coupled with meta data designed into the structure of the form and recorded in a database or pseudo data base layer via the form submission, leading finally to the automatic layout generation from database to browser presentation.

Other than the entry into the text boxes in the browser what does Word have to do with blogging? Are you trying to do HTML page layout from the document view?  Why does that make any sense? The whole point of the document view is to see the layout as it will be on the printed page! A blog is not a printed page. You want to do blog entry as a WYSWG, then you need add a form builder to Word, and integrate it with the browser where it will actually be viewed. Sure blog entries can be printed but that's secondary from being on the web page.

As usual Microsoft is putting lipstick on a pig instead of actually rethinking the problem. How can you guys even think this will pass muster? It's not like you're stupid. The MS interview process is very stringent.

Look the browser client area is the new default for all application window client areas. and like it or not standards compliant markup is your persistence layer, and I don't mean buy your own comittee and call it a standard's body compliance. That's where you have to start. You've got enough cash in the bank. Scrap office 2007 start over, do it right. Otherwise with crappy half thought feaures like these you are just locking in problems for millions of people for the next 5 years.

I have no idea what you're talking about, actually.  :)  No offense.  Word is the last tool I'd think to reach for when blogging.

It's been years since the last time I actually used a browser-based form on a regular basis to post a blog entry.  I've used ecto, MarsEdit, Radio Userland, vim, and the OPML Editor at various points to post and manage blog content.  Using the actual browser-based UI is reserved for whatever weird things my desktop client can't do on whatever blog platform I happen to be using.

And, as for... So.. what am I getting at?  For whatever my opinion's worth, I'm intrigued.  Further desktop integration via blog APIs, good.  All the machinery that is Word, not so good.  And I'm not all that impressed by the HTML output.  If anything, I'm looking for a more nimble app with cleaner output.

But, I've not yet personally experienced all the UI changes made for Word 2007, so I may be pleasantly surprised yet...

According to the w3c validation service, this page counts 258 errors. To be fair, it's mainly one type of error (id attributes can't start with an underscore). The underscore isn't the only problem though, the ids themselves are pretty ugly too (they make gcc's c++ name mangling look pretty...):

  Word 2007 is not producing those attributes.  The blog software, Community Server, is producing those attributes.  If you want to see what Word 2007 produces, look for the content within the HTML div with the CSS class "postcontent".

I'd love to use word as my main blog editor but I found MSN Spaces way to constricting (editting categories,  organising and autoposting drafts,  searching my postings etc).  Blogger was also not as powerful as Word Press which I'm happily using - except the post editting is rather poor for a none-coder.  It's good enough.

Requiring more than 512MB to run Word and Excel at the same time on a P4 is just plain rediculous! I would rather you focus on trimming Office down than adding more half-baked features that hardly get used anyway. Just look at how your teacher's kid uses Word. I rest my case.
