Scala1The sun has finally come back out in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's time again to get on the bike. I went riding today with Matt and Dan. We cruised a long loop in Columbia County that goes past my house. It's a great ride with lots of fun turns and rural scenery. It was in the mid to upper 70's today and the next couple days will be much warmer than that.

But spending time on the bike means when the stupid cell phone rings, it goes unanswered. I know what you're thinking - why am I worrying about the stupid phone when enjoying a day on the bike? Yeah, yeah... Okay, I get the point. But since I will probably ride it to and from work more and more now that it's nice out, it would be nice to be able to answer the phone in the helmet - but only if I never have to take my hands off the motorcycle controls. It would also be a very cool way (with free mobile-to-mobile minutes) to do a full duplex intercom between riding partners.

Scala3So, today I ordered the Cardco "scala-rider" Bluetooth headset that's made specifically for use in motorcycle helmets. It clamps on (no glue, which is nice) and allows you to answer the phone, as well as (if your phone allows) place calls using your voice. Plus it automatically adjusts its own volume to accommodate for road noise. It's built and designed for use at highway speeds and has some special circuitry to deal with the noise. Plus, tons of standby and talk time, and a good all-around feature set.

  • Receive and initiate calls.
  • Weather protected headset fits open-faced and full helmets.
  • Self-installation within 5 minutes, leaving no traces on helmet.
  • High impact balancing microphone for inter-city speed conditions.
  • AGC Technology automatically adjusts volume according to noise and speed levels.
  • VOX Technology enables you to receive or reject calls by voice control.
  • Special clamp allows attachment and release of the headset within seconds.
  • Up to 7 hrs. talk time / 1 week standby (recharging from regular outlet).

Once I receive it and have a chance to try it out, I'll post a review.

1.basic function

Effect at high speed environment

When driving at the speed of 70 kilometres/hour, both side of talker can hear clearly

Auto receive calls

when you are driving motocycle, both hands can not leave the handle, otherwise it will be very dangeras. The function comfirm you to answer calls need not any opperation when there is a call---need not push any button , after ring on about two seconds, you could answer the call. so it is very safety and convenient

Auto connect

if the helmet go beyond of the available distance between the mobile phone , when coming back to the availabeln again within 10 minutes,it can connect with the mobile automatically

One key opperation

There is only one key on the helmet,It’s used for power on&off ,so it is very convenient.

Simply pair

It need only one time to pair the bluetooth helmet with the mobile phone ,then the buyer need not pair them again.

Little consume

A fully charged battery provides: talk time 5 hours or standby time 100 hours)

charge method

if lowbattery, take out the battery box (from the USB socket)to charge, need not take the helmet

Just purchased a rider / passanger scala set and have returned them. The phone part worked OK, but the intercom portion was crap. I would not recommend these till they get the bugs worked out.

i bought the Teamset version in conjunction with the Zumo 550

the good - i was not unhappy with the performance while on the phone at speed, 30-70 MPH.

the bad - the Headset constantly disconnected from the Zumoduring music playback and between phone calls, and when i tried to make or take a call, the headset was unavailable to do so. after fumbling with the thing on my helmet to try and get it to turn on, i moved my attention to trying to reconnect it via the Zumo. but, why should i have to reconnect the thing EVERY time i make a call? truly dangerous, truly worthless as i do not take calls every second of the day.

more bad - the intercom... i was screaming at the top of my lungs while riding at 70MPH to try and get this thing to work. i thought the thing might've been "Not Synched" so i tried resynching it. i also tried riding at slower speeds and i couldn't hear my passenger and she couldn't hear me. i was able to get it to work for a bit, but the audio sounded like someone was scraping their nails on a chalkboard... and then once again, the units shut off. i tried screaming at the top of my lungs and even speaking normally and nothing would get the unit to function properly.

even more bad - Music. i am no audiophile, but i do believe the days of AM nasty radio are over - but not for the Scala. my passenger could not hear the music

If it doesn't have 2 headphones and play stereo it's a waste of time.

Yes, I want to answer calls sometimes but more importantly, I want to listen to music as I ride just like I do in my car (and a bluetooth radar detector too!)

I have a Zumo 550 and a full face helmet.
Is there a stero headset made suitable for this unit.
I am mostly interested in listening to music.
