I'm supposed to be on my way to Portland by now, to meet up with the youth group for a evening thing, Christmas shopping and stuff.

Supposed to be. Just one minor problem.

My truck's sitting out there in the driveway, with my laptop, camera, phone, and everything else I might possibly need tucked inside. The engine is all warmed up, the heated seats are turned on.

And the doors are all locked.

And the extra key? Yeah, let's not even go there.

To solve this problem, after failing miserably at the Magic Wire Coat Hanger Method, I brought out the smallest Yellow Pages book in the United States and looked for a local locksmith.

I'm starting to see why there are times when it's easier to live in or near the city. My first call was to a guy who, it turns out, is over in the state of Washington. Another call or two went unanswered. My next call was to a guy three-quarters of the way to the city, and he said he'd be heading my way. That's about 30 minutes away.

Days like this make me happy I have that Hemi V8 under the hood, what with the truck sitting there in the driveway at fast idle for the past hour and all.

But hey, with the PC laptop locked up in the car, at least I can be glad to have this Mac sitting on my desk in the corner over here. And I can be glad I have time to apply the gazillion software patches and updates I apparently missed since I last used it who-knows-how-long-ago.

I just hope there's enough gas left by the time they guy gets it unlocked to get me to the closest gas station.

Okay, I'm done. How's your weekend?

"OnStar, may I help you?"

Heh... Yeah, I thought real hard about OnStar, about 3 seconds after I realized the truck was locked up. Not installed in Dodge vehicles, though - Just GM. Maybe it's time to go buy that Hummer eh? Heh.

$50 to unlock the thing on a Sunday afternoon, and that was with a $10 discount. At least I learned how to shape the wire in order to unlock it myself next time.

Might also be a good idea to get AAA. Hmmm.

Ugh.. That does really SUCK! Hey- At least you did not lock yourself out of your house as well. I should know, I did that once..Now that was NOT fun!

Maybe it's different in Oregon, but my experience with AAA: Normal response time is: 3 hours.

Yeah, that coat hanger/wire thing: Never worked for me. I can make a pretty good one myself too actually. =)

My stepsister got locked out of her OnStar SUV when it was snowing once. she got out to open the gate, the dog got excited when she was coming back and jumped on the door locks. Since she had only just jumped out, she was without her coat. it was cold. oh, and the gate is about two miles from the house... so she called OnStar from the cell phone in her pocket.

"...thank you for calling On Star, we're upgrading our systems to better serve you." and she was told it'd be THREE HOURS until they could unlock the car for her.

So she called her fiance, the GM dealer with half a dozen dealerships in the city where she lives and he sent a guy out with a key. Oh, and a different vehicle.

So even with On Star you have to rely on the ways of the old country sometimes.

Oh, and if you're not using the Mac Mini that my subscription to Columbia House got you, feel free to send it my way :)
