Well, it’s a done deal. I had my back surgery today, and now I am resting at home.

And – miraculously – most of the pain in my legs and lower back is gone!

You never really know how much pain you’re in, I think. until it goes away. Then you realize what you were missing out on. I am pinching myself every few minutes just to make sure this is all real and that I am not just dreaming… It’s truly amazing.

I’m not a proponent of surgery unless it’s absolutely needed. As testament to that fact, I have been dealing with back pain for several years, trying to deal with it in a variety of ways. As I said yesterday, it was time.

And so today I can stand on my own two feet without much pain at all, I can balance better, and I feel just great.

Really, it’s incredible. With any luck, as I heal things will stay this way.

The most amazing Christmas gift I could possibly get this year came early. My doctor (Dr. Olson) and my friend/neighbor (Mike, who spent the whole day driving me to Salem for the surgery, waited around for several hours and then drove me back home, all while making sure I was doing okay) really and truly provided me with something I needed today.

I have an attitude of gratitude, as they say – and am happy beyond belief.

Absolutely FANTASTIC! Astounding! Miracle! The things they can do these days is really a miracle. I am so happy you feel better, but just remember you feel better and therefore you will want to do more......just take it easy for a while and don't over do and you will be just great! I am so happy for you, as I know how bad your back was when you still lived in New Mexico and it has gotten much worse over the years since then. Have a Merry Christmas buddy!

Stumbled on your website this morning after looking for Hughs Lake Canada! In that search for a quiet place! Anyhow, read some of your prior entries and found myself laughing... will be visiting this site often. Hope you have a speedy recovery- take all the time you need & don't push yourself. Enjoy the holidays as best as you can!

Thanks everyone. I have had phone calls, emails, a few comments on this blog, text messages on the phone - lots of support, and I appreciate it!

It's Thursday morning and I slept with little to no pain to speak of for the first time in - well, since I can remember. My back is achy and a little inflammation, but that's to be expected I think. Just gonna take it easy, and remember not to push things too fast (which I will tend to do unless I always keep not doing so in the front of my mind).

You made my day, even though it was your back. When someone's in pain, it hurts everyone. When someone, especially someone like you, gets relieved of pain, it is SO GOOD!

Enjoy your recovery.

WHat did you have done? I am also about to go under the knife for a L5-S1 fusion using some stablizers and screws. It's a job related injury and they will not pay for an artifical disc like the Mavrick or Charite. It's been almost 5 years of pain, drugs and you name it.

Please advise

Tks

I just had minimally invasion fusion (TLIF) at L5, S1 on 12/20. I have had this injury since March, 2006. Work related, as I am a home health aide. Of course, BWC does not recognize this as work related and neither does my short-term disability for University Hospitals here in Cleveland, Ohio. Anyways, the first 24 hours were bad. I was sick from the anestetic. Up out of bed that night into a chair, then down for a CT Scan at 2:30am!! What a nightmare!! Out of bed and walking the next day, with a brace. Came home with the brace and threw it out!! It makes the pain worse!! My right hip is in alot of pain, as they took bone marrow from the joint. I am only 38, single, with 3 kids, ages 17, 15, and 7. I have had some help from people, but it is hard. I have nightmares that the screws and rods are coming through my back. The pain is getting less every day, but I am not to lift anything over a gallon of milk (8 lbs.). No work for 6 more months. I hope everyone who has this surgery does think it through. Don't expect to get home and return to normal right away. It DOES take time!!!
