An old friend emailed me over the weekend and asked for some help reducing the size of a MP3 file so he could load it on his wireless phone. Seems he wanted the ringer to sound like a sheep when one certain person called (don't ask), but the MP3 he found was too big for the phone to accept.

I did a little research and found a cool little utility called FreeRIP over at msgshareware.com that will convert between .WAV, .MP3 and .OGG formats with ease. You can also convert a MP3 file to the same format, but with a different bit-rate, which allowed my friend to reduce the file size as needed, and duly embarrass his friend in public.

Mission accomplished.

And it worked very good too! Make a very BIG hit as well, got him with about 6-7 people around and had him call my cell........people were rolling on the floor!

Just want to tell ya, thanks so much. This little ripper, with huge mp3 compression abiltiys save the day. My album had some songs of 20mb and 13mb. Couldn;t email them and had very slow download time. This wonderful piece of shareware cuts two thirds of the file size. So my 20mb's are now about 8mb. Thanks you so much once again. I came to a stop, and now the ball is rolling again. No need to email back. Just wanted to thank you for posting this wonderful info. Good looking out.

Just a quick note to thank you for the tip on FreeRIP -- without reading the instructions, I reduced the bitrate on a couple of MP3's in seconds. You have to watch out for the bundled software that comes with it, but fortunately, they don't hide it much, so you just have to uncheck the boxes to NOT install the searchbar crap.

thanx man- i had the same problem with my phone and all -- i did have a program that reduced the size of my mp3 files by heaps when u lower the quality but it automatically converted the file into windows media format which my fone didn't accept.......cheers mate!!!!!
