Want to know how many minutes you have used this month? Turns out the mobile phone companies have some not-so-well-advertised numbers you can dial to find out exactly how many minutes you've used. They are:

  • #646# for Verizon and T-Mobile
  • *646# for at&t/Cingular
  • #4 for Sprint

Another tidbit of info to help watch the bottom line... Using directory assistance (411) service through the carrier can be quite expensive. So, consider using the Free411 service at 1-800-FREE411 (or 1-800-373-3411 for us numerically-challenged Blackberry types). The cost of using it is actually free, unless you consider the time it takes to listen to a short advertisement on each call. Heck, to save a buck a call, it's worth it I think.

Google Mobile allows you to send a text message to 46645 (google on the keypad) and get back all sorts of information. Check the Google Mobile page to learn about all the cool things you can do there.

For business directory information, you can also call Google up at 800-GOOG-411 (800-466-4411)

Actually, you can dial letters on your blackberry. If you dial 1-800-FREE-411 (use ALT to type letters while your dialing) the blackberry will automatically dial the correct number for you. No need to look up the numeric values.

This info should be useful for a lot of folks.

Here is some additional information(I was a Verizon sales rep for a second job recently):

Verizon has stickers that fit neatly on the back of your phone, giving you all the numbers you'll need. #BAL for account balance, #PMT for payment, #MIN for minute balance, *228 to upgrade phone programing (option #2), etc, etc. Do not push the '#' after the #646 (MIN) like you have above.

Also, the Google text service is AMAZING! It is 46645 wich is GOOGL, without the 'E' on the end.

Great blog, keep it up!

Hey Greg, thanks for spreading the good word. Just one little thing. The last sentence of your post might lead readers to think that only the Google number can do business directory information, when in fact we at 1-800-Free411 have business, residential, and gov't listings (the Google number, in contrast, does not have residential or gov't listings). Just wanted to clarify.

Best wishes,
Paul
