I'll write up a couple/few posts about this new mobile phone over the next few days I am sure, but suffice it to say I have swapped out once again and am now using the Blackberry 8800, which was just released to the market by Cingular. You might recall my recent forays into the world of Windows Mobile with the Blackjack and Palm Treo 750.

I just fired up a personal account for the built in GPS navigation system, which is a TeleNav product. It comes preinstalled and all I can say is wow! Very, very nice. I will be using it for spoken turn-by-turn directions this evening to a weekend cabin on Mt. Hood, where I am taking the church youth group for a weekend of pain skiing and snowboarding.

So yes, I have given up the Palm Treo 750 running Windows Mobile. In the end, it was the lesser of the available evils, but was not stable enough and much of the usability was still quite clunky. It's a good device, but for what I do, once again Windows Mobile just doesn't do it. I have spent four or five hours so far with the Blackberry 8800 and I am supremely impressed. Although the trackball is a little different I like it and am getting used to it quickly. The menus are a little different than they used to be on all previous BlackBerries, but I am adjusting and I can see why they made the changes.

I wish I could write more now, but seven kids are counting on me to be ready to go to the mountain on time. Hey, at least we'll find the cabin when we get there!

Looks like a great unit. I wish I could get one of those. Unfortunately, my wallet (ahem, wife) won't allow for such a purchase. :)

Hello,

My 8800 is displaying a globe Icon in the upper right hand corner with what looks like a number in front of it. Is this the GPS icon?

I am not a sophisticated user. I am trying to find an index to the icons on my Blackberry 8800 because I don't know what the "cassette tape" icon in the message bar is telling me. The 278 page User guide makes no reference to this. I think it may be a text message, but (again, I am not a sophisticated user) if it is, how do I retrieve them?

Can you help?

Probably means you have a voice mail. Have you checked that?

I have the Blackberry 8830, with Verizon. Wish it had the camera like the AT&T 8820 but life is so much better since I middle fingered Cingular (now AT&T). Another time. I was a dediciated Palm user and decided I would go with the Tero (pre windows days) and ran with the Treo 650. Four phone and two years later, I decided to check out the Motorola Q and Blackberry. The three Q owners I spoke with, had issues. I decided to go the Blackberry route. BEST MOVE EVER. It's a year now with my Blackberry - love it! - l-o-v-e - LOVE IT! I do everything on that phone. Rather then sync it to my company's Blackberry server, I IMAP the email so that I can also have my personal email on it and sync my calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. I also test drove a couple of IM software and I subscribe to Telenav. The only glitch is listening to music with the phone is trying to sync. THe audio get's chopping. But hey, My Palm would cease and a reboot wasn't always the answer... My blackberry has not yet failed me.

Sign me - proud Crackberry User!
